ARKANSAS JUDGES’ CUP GYMNASTICS MEET HELD AT HUFF ‘N PUFF

 

Jacksonville Gymnastics USAG Junior Olympic Competitive Team hosted the first large gymnastics meet of the Arkansas 2003 - 2004 competitive season.  The sanctioned meet – the Judges’ Cup – was held this last weekend at the newly renovated and expanded Huff ‘n Puff.  The Judges’ Cup meet is held yearly to benefit the Arkansas Judges Association and their educational programs. The Jacksonville  Gymnastics Team was honored to be asked by the USAG Arkansas Judges to host this year’s meet.

Sixteen Arkansas competitive teams attended the two-day meet, which was held November 14-15.  Over 220 gymnasts, Levels Four through Eight, competed in four different sessions.  Those teams attending were:  the host team, Jacksonville Gymnastics; Cabot Gymnastics from Cabot; Dorsey’s Gymnastics from Sheridan; Flame Gymnastics Academy from Ft Smith; Great Expectations from Camden; Gym Stars from Searcy; Hot Springs Springers from Hot Springs; KidSports from Little Rock; Lee Gymnastics from Batesville; NLR Super Stars from North Little Rock; One on One Gymnastics from Jonesboro; River City from Little Rock; Southwest Arkansas Gymnastics Academy from Hope; Stars & Stripes Gymnastics from Batesville; Tena’s Gymnastics from Russellville; and X-Treme Gymnastics from Ft Smith.

The Jacksonville Gymnastics USAG Junior Olympic Competitive Team, known as the Pride of Jacksonville, won many team and individual awards during last year’s competitive season.  In this, their first large meet of the season, the four different levels of the team have certainly shown that they are continuing to be winners, as each level of the Jacksonville Gymnastics team earned many personal and team awards at this Judges’ Cup Meet.

The competitive team is broken down into the following levels – Four, Five, Six and Seven.  Level Four Team has 17 members; Level Five Team has 13 members; Level Six Team has four members and Level Seven Team has eight members.  The seventeen members of the Jacksonville Gymnastics Level Four Team, ranging in age from seven to thirteen, brought home the First Place Team Trophy and the following Level Four gymnasts won the first and second place individual All-Around Awards.

The thirteen Level Five team members also won the First Place Team Trophy and the following Level Five team members won the first and second place individual All-Around Awards:

The four Level Six team members won the Second Place Team Trophy and the following team members won first and second-place individual All-Around Awards:

The Level Seven and Eight Optionals competed Friday night.  Judging was on a critique basis only with no personal or team awards given. Six of the eight Jacksonville Gymnastics Level Seven members competed.  Those six members, ranging in age from ten to fourteen, did very well with overall critique scores ranging from 33.5 to 36.25 out of 40.   

An overall score of 29 is required to attend the state meet that is held at the end of the competitive season in March.  Most of the Jacksonville Gymnastics team members have already qualified for the state competitions in this first meet.  The Jacksonville Gymnastics Team members train from six hours to twelve hours weekly and are coached by Head Coach Laurel Spears, Erin Wunderl, Shane McDonald and Denise Townsend.  They are assisted by coaches Bobby Churches and Sarah Turner.

These Level Four gymnasts won the first-place trophy at the Judges’ Cup Meet held at Huff ‘n Puff, home of Jacksonville Gymnastics.  These young gymnasts were excited to add this top trophy to the six first-place trophies won by the Level Four Team last season.  Seven team members also won top All-Around Individual Awards.
