2010 ST. LOUIS CLASSIC

COMPETITION

(Taken Sunday about 6:00 p.m.)

1222 GYMNASTS FROM 49 TEAMS FROM NINE STATES!!!!  Can you believe it?  Neither could we, but we were there, so we know how big the meet was!!!

The St. Louis Classic meet, held Friday night, all day Saturday and all day Sunday, took place in the huge St. Louis Convention Center in downtown St. Louis.  The meet was definitely the largest in which our gymnasts have competed and will be the largest for some time to come.  Our own large, large meet--the Emerald Classic--that will be held this week-end will host nearly 700 gymnasts, but this meet had 1222 gymnasts--Levels Three thru Ten--registered to compete.  The gymnasts were from 49 teams from nine states - Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Tennessee and two teams from Arkansas, including our own Jacksonville Gymnastics Team.  Although the meet was for Level Three thru Level Ten, Jax Gym competed Levels Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine and Ten.  Not only was the meet large, but the competition  was tough!!!!!!  And the judging was very hard, possibly because most of the gymnasts were heading to their state meets.

Two complete competitions were held at each session.  Each competition area - side by side and divided by a curtain down the center, had double equipment for each event.  The second floor exercise area for each side was, however, a tumble strip, which is often used for warmup time on many events, where complete double floors cannot be used (or in this case quadruple floors!)

Two sets of bars can be seen behind the practice tumble strip and two vaults are to the left of the large column on the right back.  Beams are located to the right of the floor and to the left of the floor.  The large divider curtain is to the left of the floor behind the beam.  The music was played from the table seen in the center of the picture.  The set-up was the same on the other side of the dividing curtain, except they also had two resi-mats for Level Three and Four vaults, in addition to the two vault tables.  All sorts of vendors were to the right of the competition floor - almost all of them popular, including the free charm bracelet (and the child bought the charms for it,) the cookie vendor, whose large cookies were on a stick and nicely decorated, and then the child's name would be written in icing on the cookie - and the massage  chair where we weary people could get a minute of massage for each dollar we wished to spend.

Medal awards were given in each session to 50% of the competitors for each event and all-around and the other 50% were given participation medals.  With an event this large, most gymnasts were very lucky to even be called for one event, let alone all four events or especially for all-around.  Since there were at least two sessions for each level, team awards were only announced and given after the second session had competed.

The meet began Friday evening for competition for 73 Level Seven gymnasts, from 17 teams; and 78 Level Five gymnasts from nine teams competed on the other side of the curtain.

On Saturday morning at 8:00, 80 more Level Seven gymnasts, from fifteen more teams competed; this included the six Jacksonville Gymnastics Level Seven gymnasts and 93 Level Five gymnasts from 12 teams competed on the second floor.  The Jax Gym Level Seven team members, by age, are Jordan Rogers, Lynzie VanBrocklin, Rachel Flippen, Taylor Butler, Jessica McDonough and Stephanie Singleton.  The gymnasts won the following honors and you just can't imagine how exciting it was for our gymnasts to even get on the stand or be recognized for placements.

The Jacksonville Gymnastics Level Eight Team competed with 67 Level Eight gymnasts from 17 teams and at the same time, our Level Five team members competed with 102 more Level Five gymnasts from ten teams (on the other side of the curtain.)  It really kept our coaches (Ms. Laurel, Ms. Erin and Ms. Christy) busy.

There was still one more session to go when we finally left the area about 6:00.  Competing in the last session were another 81 Level Six gymnasts from nine teams, and on Floor Two were another 104 Level Four gymnasts from eight teams that were from closer to the St. Louis area.

Our next meet will be our own Emerald Classic that is being held March 5-6-7 at the Cabot High School Gymnasium.  The first session will be held Friday night, with three sessions competing on Saturday, and another three sessions competing on Sunday.  Our staff is busily working as hard as they can to pull off our meet.  I'm sure that it will be the success that has come to be expected of Jacksonville Gymnastics.  The schedule of sessions may be reached by clicking on the Emerald Classic on home page.

I promised that the "Silly Pose" would be on the website, also.  Hope you all enjoy it as much as the girls enjoy making it!!!!

They work as hard as they play!!!!!

Parents - don't know what your plans are for hotel reservations - some of us are staying at the Drury Inn near the Convention Center.  They have some queen suites left - a queen in the bedroom and pull-out in living room - it's $95.99 if you call them and tell them you want the e-saver rate - they have a hot breakfast free and free parking - I know that this rate is not as good as some of us have gotten but if you can manage with a pull-out, this might be for you.  The phone number is 1-800-378-7946 - I spoke to Richard and Kevin.  As of 3:52, Thursday, Jan 21, they had 19 of these units).
