JAX GYM OPTIONAL GYMNASTS COMPETE

AT TEXAS DREAMS MEET - FEBRUARY 24 - 26

AT IRVING CONVENTION CENTER, IRVING, TEXAS

Part of the Irving Skyline

Jacksonville Gymnastics Competitive Levels Seven, Eight, Nine and Ten traveled to Irving, Texas, this weekend to compete at Kim Zmeskal's Texas Prime Meet.  The meet was held in the Irving Convention Center and featured 664 gymnasts from 42 teams from eleven states and one team from Mexico.  (Do note though - Jax Gym is expecting 660 gymnasts at their home meet - the Emerald Classic -  to be held March 9 - 11 - but the gymnasts at our meet will be from Arkansas and Louisiana!)  Gymnasts at this meet were from Arkansas (two teams), Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Texas, Virginia and Washington, plus Mexico.

The highlight of the weekend was the Legendz Meet held Saturday night which featured 30 top-scoring Level Nine and Ten gymnasts who had competed earlier on Friday and Saturday.  The gymnasts were divided into teams handpicked by former gymnastic World and Olympic Champions, Svetlana Boguinskaia, Carly Patterson and Hollie Vise.  The audience was treated to fantastic gymnastics skills and routines.  After the meet, the gymnasts were able to obtain autographs from the three gymnastics celebrities.

At this meet, athletes were medaled at 50% on events and also 50% on Individual All-Around.  Not all of the gymnasts medaled but they were treated to the experience of competing with some of the top gymnasts in our Region.  Ages were not broken down into many age groups - mostly junior (eleven and under) and senior - ages twelve and up.  There were several sessions for each of the levels for Ten, Nine, Eight and Seven - one session each for Levels Six, Five and Four.

Jax Gymnastics Level Ten gymnasts, Taylor Rai Johnson and Haley Edgin, were registered in the meet and were scheduled to compete in the first session on Friday morning.  However, both gymnasts have been sidelined by injury.  We all hated it because Taylor and Haley are two of the very few Level Ten Gymnasts competing this year (and last year) in Arkansas gymnastics.

Katelin McLain, Level Nine Gymnast with Jax Gym, competed Friday evening.  Katelin scored a 9.5 on her floor routine and place fifth on floor.  We were so proud of her.

The Jax Gym Level Eight Team competed Saturday morning.  Competing were Hollyann Beckner, Tonie Butler, Jessica McDonough and Allison Ramsey.  Hollyann received fifth on vault.  Allison received a 9.525 on floor for which we were very proud but she didn't place.  This is called "tough gymnastics!"

The Jax Gym Level Seven Team competed Sunday morning.  All competed in the senior level so essentially they competed against each other as well as other competitors.  Competing were Sabrina Barger, Madison Cresswell, Emma Faulkner, Joshuline Gaynor, Briyana Isaac, Skylar Martin, Madi Spears, Lynzie VanBrocklin and Caytee Wright.  Allison Tubbs would have competed in the junior level had she not sustained a broken toe this past week.  She was there, however, to encourage her teammates.  The Jax Gymnastics Team proudly won the Third-Place Team Plaque.

Preparing to compete - beam first!!!  Usually this entire team buzzes with excitement - the parents weren't sure if it was the early hour or if the gymnasts were concerned.  We are very proud of all of them!!!!

Placement honors follow.  Usually, I just list top honors but this was such a tough competition that I'm listing any placements earned.

I just want to say how thankful I am for these JAX girls and their coaches. I still talk to lots of cheer moms from other gyms, and it gets more obvious every time what a special group of girls and parents we have together this year. I don't know who all gets these emails, but there was a great email that came out recently from the co-owner of Jam Brands, that reinforced how we are doing things the 'right' way:

I had the opportunity to meet many of the athletes, parents, coaches and gym owners. During this time, I learned that all of these athletes have so many things in common. To hear these athletes talk about things like their love for their teammates, love for their coaches, love for their parents, their desire to be the best, their desire to be better athletes, the commitment they have to their team and sport and their tremendous respect for the teams they compete against is both amazing and inspiring. These athletes have learned so much about life by being an All-Star cheerleader and they truly love the sport of cheerleading!

What I noticed during The MAJORS was that, to these athletes, cheerleading is about so much more than just winning. It's about the journey, the friendships, the hard work, the education and being a part of a team. These are the things we must remember and continue to promote to those outside our sport to encourage growth. We need all gym owners and coaches to understand and live by this thought process. Coaches have the unique ability to be involved in a child's life for a decade or more, to watch these children grow as a person. If these values are instilled into our athletes, "success" will happen both on and off the floor.
