Dress Rehearsal and Recital Program
The Huff 'n Puff 2008 Dance Recital Rehearsal was held Saturday morning, May 24, at the Robinson Hall Music Center Auditorium in Little Rock. The rehearsal began promptly at 9:00 and continued until a little after 11:00. Ms. Laurel began the rehearsal, as always, with the curtain call practice. In that way, the performers could leave after their performance, unless they had performances to perform later.
A few pictures are shown here at the beginning of the curtain call - not all performers can be seen but the recreational dancers are shown here. The Jacksonville Dance Company performers are not shown here. About 170 performers, not including instructors, were involved in the dress rehearsal and recital.
The rehearsal and recital were under the direction of Ms. Laurel Spears and she was assisted by Instructors: Kim Holladay, Jennifer Holladay, Lois Bryan, Lindsey Sweet, April Kiser and Deanna Johnson, who filled in for Ms. Sara, who had been on maternity leave. We were so excited that Ms. Sara was able to join us for the recital -while Daddy was home feeding the baby.
Rehearsal
As usual, the tiny ones stole the entire show at the recital. They are so cute when they dance, and surprisingly enough, as I have told parents over the years, they do learn to dance - and not only that, but they learn early how to entertain. I deliberately left the front part of this picture - that is the orchestra pit which is right in front of the stage - we had to be very careful that none of the children decided to dance off - somehow they all knew to be careful. Please notice the backdrop in these pictures - we were very proud of our "Dancing with the Stars" backdrop!!!!!
The four young dancers on the right are in Ms. April's classes on the Base.
"Wild, Wild West" Dancers take their curtain call.
Cheer and Pom Dancers take their bow with Ms. Deana - while on the right, the youngest dancers from the base take their bow, also.
These Dancers are some of Ms. Lindsey's lyrical dancers.
Shown here with Ms. Deanna are two of Ms. Sara's four Cheerleaders in their striking black and blue outfits. Standing in the back row in the red and white is a group of Ms. Sara's hiphop dancers.
This was not all of the dancers - Most of these dancers were from our recreational program. I do see one Company Dancer and I don't recall if they were in the practice curtain call.
This little one was ready to perform at all times - with that beautiful smile, which just seemed to come naturally to her.
Rebecca and Aspen were getting last-minute costume assistance. It was a fortunate night several years ago when I met these two precious girls at Capt D's.
Ms. Kim and Ms. Jennifer's çombined classes of Tap 'n Tumble Dancers performing to "Good Ship Lollipop." Just look how tiny and cute these dancers are!!!
Ms. Lindsey's lyrical dancers from Monday night's 7:30 class - great job Ms. Lindsey for first-year dance teacher.
Sarah had just completed her leap to center left while the others were turning - Many of these dancers are on the gymnastics team. Others are cheerleaders.
These were all the pictures that I took - I wanted to watch the rehearsal and it was difficult to take from the side of the stage. When I get the recital pictures, I will post them on the web. It will take several, several weeks, however, but they are worth waiting for.
I didn't take my camera but this was sent to me after the recital. We've all been a family for a
long time.

The Recital was held Saturday, May 24th at Robinson Auditorium and began promptly at 6:00. After a brief introduction to our 28th annual recital by Ms. Laurel, a thoughtful invocation was given by Molly Rae Walter's father. The recital was exciting and fast moving, and each performance moved from one right into the next. Just as at the rehearsal that morning, the recital was so well-organized and the performers all did such a great job. I realize that I am very biased, but it seems to me that each year, our dancers get better and better and each recital is better than the year before. Also, the packed audience was very appreciative of all the numbers.
The program follows:

DANCERS, GYMNASTS AND CHEER STUDENTS
Jacksonville Dance company
Has continued success
Congratulations to the Jacksonville Dance Company and Huff ‘n Puff instructors. We are so proud of each of you. Each instructor and the dance groups have contributed to the continued success of the Company, and each year the performances have gotten even better.
The Company competed in four different competitions this year and won several top competition awards. In early July, the Company dancers will be attending the Nexstar National Competition to be held in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
Members of the Dance Company were as young as five years old when they auditioned last August and they did exceptionally well each time they competed.
Ages of the groups are mixed and ages are averaged for each group. A dancer may dance in different age groups for different genre of dance. Jacksonville Dance Company competed the following dances in 2007-2008 competitive season:
Tap: “Five-Six-Seven-Eight” and “Dancin’ Fool”
Jazz: “Let’s Get Loud”
Pom: “Hey Little Momma”
Lyrical - Large Group: “Never Alone”
Small Group : “Three A. M.”
Hip Hop: “Hand Clap” “Shake” “Wait A Minute” “Rewind”
“Tambourine”

Dance Company auditions:
Auditions for 2008-2009 Dance Company will be held weekend of July 26-27. If you are interested in your child auditioning, it is important that your child attend the company preparation classes that will begin the week of July 7th (after the National Competition). More information will be posted on the classes. Company classes stress dance technique and presentation. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask Ms. Laurel or your child’s dance instructor.

28TH ANNUAL RECITAL

Sheryl Zimmerman Robinson Center Music Staff
For the past 28 years at this time, I have sat down to try to write a few lines, in an effort to express my gratitude and appreciation to all our students and parents and to our staff for all that goes into this performance tonight. We have come so far from the very first recital on the stage at the Thomas Community Center at LRAFB, to the Jacksonville Community Center, to every high school in the area--from Cabot to North Little Rock--to performing for the fourth year here at Robinson Center Music Hall.
We are thankful for the opportunity to perform here tonight and it is because of the hard work of our staff and your children, and your continued support of our staff, that we are able to be here. I wish to thank all of you for that support.
Whether this is your first Huff ‘n Puff recital, or your sixteenth (or even twenty-eighth,) we hope you are as proud of your children and their performances as we are.
Our Goal from the very first year has been “We want your child to enjoy the pleasure of learning the art of dance or the skills of gymnastics while also experiencing the joy of achievement.” It is our sincere hope that when grown, your children will remember the fun and the achievements gained from their years at Huff ‘n Puff. I feel that our staff is a remarkable group and we hope that you also feel they are playing a positive part in your child’s life.
We hope also that you have as much pride in us as we have in your children and their accomplishments.
I appreciate our entire staff—teaching, coaching and office—for all that they do every day for us and for your children. Some of our staff members have been with us since they were children themselves, and our entire staff is like an extended family.
And last, but not least, I would like to honor my daughter. The responsibilities required for managing this business are endless and not accomplished without a good deal of sacrifice. My pride lies not only in Laurel’s ability to dance or teach but also in her ability to see things as they are, to relate to people and to care for the students. Her creative talents, combined with dedication, and her courage to set higher goals, and to help the students attain those goals, have made Huff ‘n Puff an even better training facility for dance, gymnastics and cheerleading.
Your continued support of Laurel and our staff is sincerely appreciated. Without your support, we would be nothing.
